May 11: General strike for Wednesday.
Air traffic controllers in Greece announce 24-hour strike from 00:01 to 23:59. What normally happens is all airports are forced to shut down, and all international and domestic flights to/from/within Greece are canceled. Now we wait for official announcements by airlines, typically released 24-48 hours before a strike, sometimes less. Why? See the second paragraph of this post. It is not an airport strike; it is not an airline strike.
Civil aviation authority (OSYPA) to join 24-hour strike.
Ferries and ships in Greece will not sail, due to 24-hour strike by seafarers and sailors beginning at midnight. Ferries to/from Italy are typically not affected. *Note that this is not a strike by ferries or ships.
Journalists to strike 24 hours from 6:00, during which there will be no broadcasts, live reporting or online updates. Foreign correspondents and agencies working.
Public sector union ADEDY and private sector union GSEE to stage general, 24-hour strike against austerity.
This typically affects everything run or funded by the Greek state, including public transport, museums, archaeological sites, hospitals, post offices, courthouses and tax/customs offices, with air traffic controllers often joining and forcing airports to close and airlines to cancel flights. *Will update when details are announced. Why don’t we know anything now? Read the second paragraph above.
Communist workers group PAME to announce action after May 2 meeting.
*Hat tip to ‘TH’ for alerting me before I could check myself. Readers please note that I maintain Twitter and this website in my spare time and am sometimes unavailable during the 18 hours I am awake.
