Two tourists honored for their loyalty on Crete

A Danish couple who have been visiting the town of Aghios Nikolaos in Lasithi, Crete, were awarded by the municipality on Tuesday for their loyalty to the area.

Jethe Outzen and her husband Morten Boysen have been traveling to Aghios Nikolaos for holidays once or sometimes even twice a year without fail for the past 27 years, enjoying, as they said, the beautiful natural surroundings of Mirabello Bay.

The couple were awarded a certificate of loyalty and given souvenirs by the mayor of Aghios Nikolaos, Dimitris Kounenakis. They said that they are touched by the love shown to them by the local community and added that have made some very good friends there over the years. Other factors that have kept them coming to the island for almost three decades include Crete’s temperate climate, its cuisine and its wine.

However, Boysen told the mayor that steps should be taken to curb illegal construction that poses a threat to the local character and natural landscape of the area, while he also complained about the noise made by motorcycles at night, saying that the town could use more sidewalks and would benefit from entire pedestrianized zones.
