Turkey cuts Aegean in two with military exercises

In what is being seen as an escalation of tensions, Turkey has announced plans to conduct military exercises in a broad swathe of the Aegean.

In what is being seen as an unprecedented provocation, Turkey has issued a NOTAM in which it has announced itsintention to block off a large swathe of the Aegean Sea for military exercises from tomorrow until the end of the year.

The area in question extends from the island of Skyros to Limnos, meaning that the move by Turkey will effectively cut the Aegean in two and will constitute a gross violation of Greek territorial sovereignty and international law.
According to diplomatic sources, the move by Ankara amounts to a decisive escalation of tensions between the two countries. On the instructions of the Prime Minister Greece has filed official protests, denouncing the move as illegal at all relevant international organizations including NATO, the EU and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The timeline of the Turkish move
On Friday 27/2, Turkey issued the NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) in which it requested - beginning tomorrow and for ten months (until December 2015), that a large expanse in the heart of the Aegean be reserved for its military exercises. The area in question even includes a part of the island of Limnos and a large portion of Greek airspace.
With the latest NOTAM Turkey is seeking to effectively block off the entire Aegean as it has already secured another two large areas for exercises in the north and southeast Aegean.
Given that the Greek authorities denied the request to issue such a NOTAM, Turkey issued the notice unilaterally, illegally ‘reserving’ the region which extends from Skiros, Alonissos, and Ai Stratis as well as an area between Skiros and Evoia.
On Saturday and Sunday the Greek government, rather than responding directly to Turkey, filed official protests with the UN, ICAO and NATO, denouncing the move which it said constituted a breach of Greece’s territorial sovereignty and posed a threat for interational aviation.
Escalating tensions
The latest move by Turkey comes after the country issued two provocative NAVTEX warnings at the beginning of the year unilaterally blocking off two large areas of the Aegean, one in the north between Agios Oros, Thasos, Samothrace and Limnos and a second in the southeast between Ikaria, Fournoi, Patmos and Amorgos.
The Turkish attempts to flex its muscle in the Aegean also come following heightened tensions around the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone which Turkey refuses to recognize. Late last year the country sent the seismic research vessel the ‘Barbaros’ accompanied by warships to conduct seismic surveys in areas already licensed by the Cypriot government for exploitation by international consortia.
The timing of the latest move is thought to be an attempt to exploit the perceived shakiness of a fledgling Greek government struggling to find its feet amid difficult negotiations with its European partners over the future of the country within the eurozone.
The latest Turkish provocation also comes despite a recent agreement on Friday between the new Greek general secretary of the foreign ministry and the Turkish deputy foreign minister Feridun Sinirlioglu to restart an agreement to take measures to rebuild trust.
